Dr. May Lam

Dr Lam is the Founder and President of The Hong Kong Mental Wellness Association, currently the Director of The Alpha Clinic & The Alpha Wellbeing Centre. She is a Psychiatry Specialist, Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, United Kingdom. Dr Lam also takes up Honorary Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at the HKU Faculty of Medicine; Clinical Associate Professor (Honorary) at Department of Psychiatry, CUHK; and the Adjunct Associate Professor at Department of Social Work and Social Administrations, HKU. Dr Lam graduated from the University of New South Wales, Australia. Dr Lam was the Visiting Scholar at Harvard Medical School Department of Social Medicine, Harvard University in 2003 – 2004. She has obtained International Clinical, Operational and Health Services Research and Training Award and the Forgarty Research Grant at the Harvard Medical School.

Dr Lam has been working in the field of mental health for years, in particular child and youth mental wellbeing and development. She is passionate in providing mental health professional trainings at schools for teachers, parents and the general public by delivering educational talks and workshops, promoting mental health and mental health education at the local Hong Kong community and at mainland China including the Greater Bay Area. She is also involved in leading various community projects in helping young people and adults with emotional problems.

Dr Lam is the executive committee member of the Mental Health Association Executive Committee, the co-chair of its Integrated Community Centre for Mental Wellness Sub-committee, Honorary Consultant (Social Work Services Division) of Caritas HK. She is also the Life Advisor, Founder and Co-chair of the Variety Butterfly Programme under Variety-The Children’s Charity HK. She is passionate in helping underprivileged young people to maximize their potentials given their strengths and interests.

Dr Lam has served as Board Member and Committee Member of various Government Departments, such as Board Member of The Mental Health Review Tribunal. She is currently the Honorary Consultant (Psychiatry) of the HKSAR Government Police Negotiation Cadre, Committee Member of the Task Group on Evaluation of the Expert Group on New Service Protocol for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Member of Council on Human Reproductive Technology of the Food and Health Bureau and Advisory Committee Member for Regulatory Standards for Private Healthcare Facilities at the Department of Health. Academically, she has published various papers in international and local peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Gilbert WONG joined the Royal Hong Kong Police Force as an Inspector in 1993 and was promoted to Chief Superintendent of Police in 2017. Upon his retirement from the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) in 2021, Gilbert was appointed as a Life Honorary Consultant, Police Negotiation Cadre (PNC), an Honorary Consultant, Police Carelinks Cadre and an Honorary Hong Kong Police College Advisor.  In July 2022, Gilbert was awarded the Hong Kong Police Medal for Meritorious Service in recognition of his exemplary and devoted service in the HKPF for over 29 years.

Gilbert graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Science and Physiology in Australia. He obtained a Graduate Certificate in Education in the USA, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Management in Australia, a Master of Administrative Leadership Degree, a Master of Counselling Degree in Australia and a PhD in Behavioral Science in the USA.  He graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, USA with a Certificate in Criminal Justice Education and completed the Harvard Program on Negotiation.

Gilbert is currently the Founder and CEO of HypnoHealth Consulting Limited in Hong Kong, founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Mental Wellness Association, an Honorary Fellow of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention and an Honorary Advisor of Wu Yee Sun College, Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Gilbert is the co-author of a non-fiction book, “Who Cares Wins”: The Art and Science of Crisis Negotiation, which highlights Hong Kong Police Negotiators’ Crisis Interventions – An Eight-Cs Model embracing passion, nobility and commitment.

Gilbert was first exposed to the world of negotiation in 1999 and was the former Commanding Officer of the PNC (2010-2021).  In addition to his law enforcement experience, Gilbert has been a certified medical and clinical hypnotherapist since 2005 and a life member of International Society for Investigative and Forensic Hypnosis since 2011. He was certified as a master hypnotherapy trainer by both the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association and the International Association Counselors and Therapists in 2012.

Gilbert is a rescue scuba diver and has so far completed one full marathon and six half marathons. Last but not least, Gilbert is passionate in understanding the mindset of people and always identifies himself as a life adventurer, peace-maker, fear-buster, conflict mediator and relationship builder.
